Clemency dynamics in Arizona and nationwide
Over the holiday period last year, the papers and this blog were buzzing about the modern disuse of the historic executive clemency powers (see some of the posts at this archive). Today, this article from Arizona provides interesting data and discussion of the decline of clemency in that state, and the article is especially effective in documenting the forces which account for this decline in Arizona and nationwide. Here's the lead:
Arizona governors are largely ignoring advice from the state's clemency board, leaving hundreds of prisoners serving time that the board has said doesn't fit their crimes.
A decade ago, Arizona abolished parole, leaving the governor with the final say if any inmates should be let out of prison early. Since then, the number of inmates recommended to the governor for shortened prison terms by the Board of Executive Clemency has skyrocketed. But in the vast majority of cases, even in those where the trial judge agrees with the board that a sentence is too long, the governor has rejected the board's recommendations.

Mr. Luis Lopez was raised by two God fearing parents and was raised with strong values and morals. He was a married man with four children. Him and his wife Sally Lopez were having marital problems due to her drinking and going out with her sisters and not taking care of their children. To make a long story short one night when the children were alone they called their father he was already living at his mothers home. She came in early in the am from a night out with the sisters. They argued and she stabbed him several times in the back in front of the children. Him loving her so much he was able to take the knife from her and to stop her from coming at him stabbed her thigh as not to really hurt her but more to stop her.
The paramedics arrived and saw the scene and attended to him first due to the injury and the blood all over him. (Left her to die)
Later that day in the hospital he asked to see her and told his mother Mom please tell Sally that I love her and did not mean to hurt her. Little did he know that she bled to death and he was later arrested and charged with murder.
Parents gathered money and refinanced their home to hire a lawyer by the name Hermillo Iniquez to defend him. Mr. Lopez distraught and still in shock felt that he deserved to go to prison for life and did not want defense. He felt he deserved to die for his crime. He was paid handsomely by the parents and was not able to defend him he pulled out.
Later come to find out that after he had been tried and sentenced the sisters said that she was pregnant from her lover and Mr. Lopez was not aware of such infidelity. And was handed down a sentence of life with no parole.
His mother died several years ago and Mr. Lopez has lost all hope to see freedom again. And for his children they have been turned against him by her family.
I have taken an interest in this case due to failure of the system and the love for his parents, now his father is old and sick please someone out there help me find justice.

Has there been any change in Mr. Lopez case?

As i just finished reading this fairy tail story and the painted picture of in this murders mind in which he himself wish it was rolled played in that sort. Needless to say the actual facts were left out. The fact that Mr. Louie Lopez was being served dinner and became upset for the fact that Mrs. Sally Lopez decided she was leaving their abusive marriage. And the fact that she had been stabbed 82 times and reason for him stopping was because an officer had arrived to a bloody scene and ordered him to drop the one out of 5 or six knives that were already broken inside of her body. so you bring up money that was given to a lawyer that didn't defend him. The money isn't the issue because the money will never bring Mrs.Sally Lopez back money will never make her a mother to her 4 children that was all taken by Mr. Louie Lopez.

I was visited by sally a couple of weeks before her death. I was contacted by a lawyer that would give free advice on a spanish radio station...I have alot to add to this story, I told Sally that he was going to kill her and she said, "I know"...

Justice has not been served yet. Let Louie remember that he was stabbing himself when the cops showed up. Sally was portrayed as an unfit, alcoholic, but he never mentioned she was 'punch drunk' and brain-damaged by Louie throughout the course of their violent and brutal relationship. The abuse from louis started very early in the relationship, she had suffered various broken bones, including her facial bones, he chopped her long hair off with a knife, the last time i saw her, she had a bruise the size of melon on her back where he had punched her. I knew her since grade school and saw her a couple of weeks before she was murdered. I could write a book on her life, and may Louie be haunted by her memory forever!! Sally will never get clemency or a fair trial, so why should he? May he rot in hell..
