Big conference on US punishment record
In a little more than a month, The New School is holding a major Social Research Conference entitled, "Punishment: The U.S. Record." As explained here, the goal of the conference is to "examine the foundations of our ideas of punishment, explore the social effects of current practices and search for viable alternatives to our carceral state." As detailed here and here, the list of invited speakers and the topics to be discussed are truly amazing.

No prosecutors. No victims' advocates. Not even defense attorneys. Virtually no judges. No probation officers. No legislators.
The ivy on the ivory tower is awfully thick. Good luck producing recommendations to our "carceral state" that have the slightest chance of becoming policy.
