Encouraging midyear 2024 violent crime data in lastest report from Major Cities Chiefs Association
This Crime and Justice News entry highlights notable violent crime data reported this past week from the Major Cities Chiefs Association. Here are the details:
Reports of crimes in four major categories are down in the first half of 2024 compared with the same period last year, the Major Cities Chiefs Association says, compiling statistics from 69 jurisdictions. Homicides dropped to 3,124 this year from 3,783 in the same period last year. Reported rapes were down to 13,064 from 14,472, the robbery total fell to 45,575 from 48,529, and aggravated assaults decreased to 134,293 from 141,944.

Kamala should campaign on this as 4 years of Biden led to a decrease in crime. Republicans rehash the propaganda that Democrats are "soft on crime" and crime increases as a result of lenient policies. The U.S. is safer now than 4 years ago and I predict crime rates will continue to decline as Americans age and birth rates continue to decline.
I believe conservatives desire high crime rates as a satiates a bloodlust. These reactionary suburbanites love the idea of living in a dangerous community to break the monotony of their banal lives.

Doug,
The first post in this thread is partisan and insulting. Per your rules, please delete.
How is this stuff getting by you?

As explained in another thread, Tarls, because the vast majority of recent comments are now on-topic, productive and polite, I'm generally allowing for the occasional stray comments that do not fit that description. But I'll be deleting more comments if/when discussions veer into less productive territory. Roughly speaking, until the last 24 hours, about 95% of comments have been more on-topic, productive and polite since I stated moderating. Though I am not suprised I'm getting calls to moderate more aggressively, I have been comfortable approving nearly all comments because the moderating function seems to largely deter the kinds of spitting matches that would emerge the past. But if they return, I will respond accordingly.

So, the rule has changed? It’s no longer, “partisan, rude, or off topic,” but rather if it is one of a “majority” of “partisan, rude, or off topic” comments?

My goal for these comments and my moderation efforts remains the same, Tarls, namely to encourage more on-topic, productive and polite comments in response to the main postings. Ideally, all those who choose to comment here, especially those who choose to comment with regularity, will try to advance that goal.
But surely some comments will sometimes include phrases that may appear off-topic, unproductive and/or rude. If those comments are relatively rare and do not seem to undermine my goal, I likley will not always delete those comments. But all who comment here should understand that it is on-topic, productive and polite comments that are most welcome and off-topic, unproductive and rude comments that are most likely not to make it through moderation.

Is there a hurricane in Ohio? Because those goalposts are moving all over the place.

This space, Tarls, is not an arena with a team of officials tasked with enforcing a detailed rulebook as opposing teams seek to score goals. Rather, this is a space in which I seek to encourage more on-topic, productive and polite comments in response to the main postings. Some commentors make that harder than others.
