Another week with another notable set of prison headline and stories

A number of notable and mostly disheartening press pieces aabout prison realities caught my eye this week, and here is a round up:

From the AP, "The US government is closing a women’s prison and other facilities after years of abuse and decay"

From the AP, "Justice Department announces sweeping reforms to curb suicides in federal prisons and jails"

From Cleveland.com, "‘Wreaking havoc’: Cleveland gang emulated Mafia, killed man and ran drug-ring, feds say"

From The Guardian, "Inmates burn themselves in protest at ‘inhumane’ Virginia prison conditions"

From Honolulu Civil Beat, "The Mental Health Crisis In Hawaii’s Prisons: ‘The Suicides Keep Coming’"

From the Marshall Project, "After Jail Deaths and No Justice, This Kentucky Lawyer Tried to Make a Difference"

From Stateline, "State prisons turn to extended lockdowns amid staffing shortages, overcrowding"

Thank you for highlighting this issue. As a family member of someone in prison, I am extremely anxious and am feeling helpless. He was able to settle down more or less at a prison camp, stayed clear of drugs the whole time, took classes and started to make plans for life after prison. He was fretting about being able to get into the RDAP, residential drug addiction program that was proven to reduce recidivism as well as addiction and reduced BOP's costs and helped inmates start up their lives after prison by reducing their sentences by up to year (I think that's a provision of the FSA). Now, with more RDAP locations about to close, it looks like BOP is giving up on RDAP.

Inmates will be shuttled to other locations, which is a long and dangerous process. And then they will end up in places that have a higher security and further away from home. They are making more dangerous criminals by hardening them and giving them no chance to recover and rehabilitate. I am heart-broken.
